“A Sense of Place:” The theme of this recital is a sense of place—both in the literal and figurative sense. Some pieces like Heitor Villa Lobos’s compositions (Minstrel Impressions, The Soul of Brazil, and Dance of the White Indian) are a portrait of life and culture in his native Brazil. Other pieces, like Claude Debussy’s L’isle Joyeuse (Island of Joy) use place as a metaphor for a more ephemeral idea, such as the turbulent beginning of an illicit love affair.
The program also includes works by Beethoven, Scarlatti, Granados, Albeniz, Prokofiev, and Missy Mazzoli.
